How to Revise your Work for Camp NaNoWriMo

Last Blog of the Editing and Revising series

By S. A. Crow

This is the last blog in our Revision and Editing series. We covered in this series:

Today we will talk about how I actually revised my 50k novel in 15 days during Camp NaNoWriMo.

The most important thing is to prepare for revising

Make a plan

After you have your project. Make a plan.

  • For any project, it is best to start with a calendar of the month. Mark off any days you know you won’t be able to work on your project for any reason. I take one day off a week for rest and to catch up on other projects like housework.

  • You might also want to take off days if you live with a chronic illness.

  • After you have marked these days off, look at how many days you have left to work.

  • Make a realistic and low goal for each working day.

  • Don’t push yourself too hard. Remember that it is always a pleasant surprise if you exceed your goal.

  • I advise getting to know your project again. Pick how you are going to track your revision or editing

Here is what Camp NaNoWriMo suggested

I did an hour a day for 30 days

Join some sprints

You can search for sprints.

To search YouTube, simply go to the search menu bar and type in writing sprints live and it will give you a list of sprints that are happening.

On Twitch go to the search bar and type in writing sprints.

The Facebook group I listed above has sprints every day.

I’m hosting sprints on my Discord server for the entire month.

Get to know your project before you start revising or editing

Here is a worksheet you can use. Simply make a copy or print it out.

Take some time and make lists of scenes, characters, plot threads, sub plots, and important moments.

Don't give up, ask for encouragement

Talk to your friends and writing buddies when you get into a slump or don’t think you’re going to make it. That is what we are here for. Every time you sit down and put words on the page you are winning even if you think they are the worst. Because some will never get that far because of fear.

Reward yourself

This has always been a hard one for me. When you make your plan include rewards for achievements. I have to make sure that my rewards are not food-based because of my health which makes it doubly hard but I’ve been very creative of late.

You can also look at the suggestions in How to Stay Motivated and Keep Track of Edits

How I planned my revision:

Obsidian Vendetta

28 chapters and over 50k words

I use the bookend revision technique to do my first revision

What is the Bookend Revision technique

My reward was an episode of a show that only had 8 episodes. So I divided my chapters by 8 and then made a page in my journal.

I hosted 3 writing sprints a day, 5 days a week during the month. Each sprint was 1 hour of 15 minute sprints. I will host this sprint schedule for every NaNoWriMo event in my Discord server. If you would like to join an active writing community that’s also a LGBTQ+ safe space. Simply go here https://shirleycrow078.wixsite.com/authorscrow/writers-workshop

The next NaNoWriMo event will be in November. National Novel Writing Month

I pulled up the chapter and looked over my notes from the lists I made. Then I looked for research tags.

After reviewing the research tags. My writing became richer with more senses. Touch, smell, sound, taste, and look are all senses. As well, I had a mood and a sense of foreshadowing that I included.

Last, I put the chapter through ProWriteAid. https://prowritingaid.com/Premium

I have to say this subscription was the best birthday present ever. I have dyslexia so revisions and editing can be difficult for me. This program where you get a discount when you take part in any NaNoWriMo event is the best thing to happen in my writing life.

What I’m working on this month

Small Embers

Linda’s normal day is thrown for a loop when she’s partnered with the new student in fourth period chemistry lab. Little did she know that he’d be the love of her life and that she’d do everything to make sure he can be the best he can be. Even if that means he believes the worst of her for the rest of their lives.

Malcolm’s first day at a new school ends in disaster when he drops the test tube in fourth period chem class. Little does he know that she will change his life in ways he can never imagine. He’ll never forgive her for the rest of his life, until it's long past too late.

Writing prompt of the week

Here is mine

“They are trafficking in white cargo. Eliot…” He’s gone from the room before they can even get the full sentence out all that’s left of him is the echo of his distinctive growl. He’s already on the plane when they arrive to take off for their destination. His cheeks are flushed, the vein in his forehead pulsing and his hands forming fists over and over again on the arm rests of his seat. It isn’t going to be pretty when he gets his hands on the bad guys.
