Preptober 2021
We are going to cover what is Preptober all about, why you should try it, and what you can learn from it. Let’s dive into the NaNoWriMo pool and learn what this October thing is all about.
If you don’t know, November is National Novel Writing Month where writers all over the world attempt to write 50,000 words on a novel in 30 days. It isn’t if we win or lose, but the effort put in and the connections we make that will last you a lifetime. If you follow any writers on YouTube or social media, you might have heard a phrase going around Preptober. So what is Preptober? Is it like Inktober for writers?
What is Preptober?
I’m uncertain when we started taking the month of October and preparing for NaNoWriMo, but it’s become a thing. Get it, Prep Tober, preparing for NaNoWriMo in October. Like I said before if you search YouTube or the hashtag you will find tons of authors talking about ways they do Preptober. Like the word describes, it’s all about doing the hard behind-the-scenes work before NaNoWriMo starts, so all you’ll need to do is start writing on November 1st.
What can you do for Preptober?
Develop your characters
Work on settings and locations
Find the mood and theme for your story
Plot and outline your story
Look at genre expectations and beat sheets
Develop a better plan for NaNoWriMo that fits your needs. You might need to write more words a writing day because of events you can’t avoid.
Why do you want to do Preptober, even if you’re a pantser or a plantser?
Preptober doesn’t have to be for plotters alone. Like, on the list above, there are many questions and activities that you can do that has nothing at all to do with plotting or outlining your novel. You can join social media post challenges and communicate about your project with potential readers.
Communities that are doing Preptober and how you can get in on the fun?
There are so many communities doing Preptober.
The NaNoWriMo site has a NaNo Prep 101 and forums that you can join and find community with.
Several Facebook Groups are doing Preptober, like Heart Breathings Word Sprint Challenge group.

What am I working on
I’m spending this month preparing for NaNoWriMo. I’m writing my 2nd Urban Fantasy Noir Mystery named Moonstone.
Book 2 in the PIR Series
The 2nd book in my Urban Fantasy Noir Mystery P.I.R. Series. Follow the adventures of Avril, a half-fairy detective in Fort Worth, Texas, as she deals with the frustration of being off the job when a shifter friend William needs her expertise. William notices that shifter youth are missing, with no explanation. Oh, and she broke up with the Master Vampire of the City and he's a little pushy about getting answers from her about why they're breaking up.

I finished approving the editor changes to Chapter 13
The editor is working on Chapter 19 as we speak
Soon I will send it to a friend to have another set of eyes on it.
