Who is Yulia Zhukova?
A famous Russian author with many books under her name. An artist and instructor. I met Yulia through my writing group On the Wings for Writers and it’s been a joy to work with her. She only has a few pieces in English and shared them with us a time or two. I’ve also been lucky enough to read her fan fiction on a popular fan fiction site.
Recently I got the honor of being a writing buddy and helping to encourage her to finish her fan fiction story.
I absolutely love her art. I followed her on instagram during Inktober last year. Inktober is a drawing challenge for the month of October so while the rest of us were doing Preptober for NaNoWriMo she was doing both Inktober and Preptober. She offered two black and white character sketches as prizes to our Writing Retreat winner in January. I so wanted to win that prize but sadly I didn’t. So even if you don’t understand or read Russian make sure to follow her instagram posts. Here is a sample of her work she let me use for advertising the prize for the retreat.
Genre
Writing original fiction in Russian she can’t really find a genre that fits her work. In October was working on a LGBT portal fantasty with a murder investigation and politics.
Works
Yulia has several novels published in Russia and is very popular there. Her only English work is a fan fiction posted on the popular site AO3. You don’t have to be a member to read it and it’s well worth your time.
The story is based on 2 movies Onmyoji and Onmyoji 2 set in the Heian period of Japan history where demons, ghosts and other creepy nasties wandered the streets freely. Featuring the characters Abe no Seimei, a onmyoji or yin yang master attached to the imperial court in Kyoto Japan. He’s half-fox and long-lived; he meets Minamoto no Hiromasa, a court noble. Both Abe no Seimei and Minamatoto no Hiromsas are historical figures. She has done a wonderful job telling a compelling story featuring these two people with wonderful research into the history, culture of the Heian period.
