Quote from 2020 Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards: “…I also really appreciate that this story seems to aim at relating to that rather tricky age group of boyhood that often goes unseen or at least unfocused on in adolescence and literature. It’s wonderful to see a character like this that boys will be able to relate to in the struggles he goes through, both in the plot and internally. I really appreciated seeing that done well here. The writing in this book is compelling. I think it works really well for older middle-grade readers/YA readers, who will really connect to the provocative and slightly chaotic (to say the least) nature of the plot. A lot of growing up feels that way and I think this book will really resonate well with a large group of kids. The way the story concludes was impressive as well. It hits a great moment of intensity in the adventure, the changing and growing characters who have gone through so much together and pass-through this moment where nothing will ever be the same... Well done."- Judge, 27th Annual Writer’s Digest Self-Published Book Awards; 65/65

Irish Town Snippet

  1. Jester

Powder Match: 60 Days

I take a shot of cheap whiskey. The sun creeps an orange hue through my window. I take another shot to get me to normal and begin my school day. My name is Jeremiah Connelly. Most people call me Jester.

In the reflection of a cracked and scratched mirror, I see a woman creeping through my neighbor’s backyard wearing only a parka and snow boots, carrying her black high heels. I hear a sliding door open. I crouch down and peek over my window sill. As she escapes, I see my neighbor with another woman. It’s his teenage daughter.

My neighbor is huge and jacked. His muscles ripple across his shoulders as he breathes. He’s sprawled out on the bed naked with one leg hanging over the side. His daughter whips the other woman’s G-string panties off his lampshade, holds them between her two fingers like a biohazard, and throws them in the hamper. She turns on the shower, tiptoes over to the bed, grabs empty beer cans and an ashtray to dump into the trash. She slaps the back of his thinning grey hair to wake him. He continues to lie motionless. She slaps his back and he wakes up. She hands him a cup of coffee and turns to open his closet to pick out his outfit for the day.

Recent work:

ABOUT ROSE

She is the new grace,

A ballroom beauty that prefers a good stage and song.

Decorated in color,

her hair bursts in bright pinks and greens.

Her body is caressed by tattoos preaching liberty and life, with a splash of rebellion.

She spends more time on her nails, than a man would his car, and I like that.

I miss being dressed for.

I don’t know her. She’s probably some other man’s princess.

But she’s hope.

A morning hope.

I bow to this Cinderella.

My ballroom may be empty,

But every morning I see her,

I know. I know that she’s out there.

Love is not dead;

it just looks a little different these days
